Overview

Overview

The Langtang Valley trek is close to Kathmandu but feels far away. The trail climbs from subtropical forest into a wide glacial valley full of yaks, prayer flags and stone villages, ending at Kyanjin Gompa beneath a ring of snowy peaks.

Langtang is home to the Tamang people, whose culture and traditions are closely linked to Tibet. The valley was badly hit by the 2015 earthquake, and the community has rebuilt with amazing strength. Trekking here directly supports the families who live in the valley.

Why I love this trek

Langtang has everything: wildlife in the forest, big glaciers, friendly villages and a great viewpoint hike at the end. It’s also quieter than the Everest and Annapurna trails, and you don’t need a flight to get there.

Good to know

  • Fitness: Moderate. Days are 5–7 hours, with the biggest climb on the hike up Tserko Ri.
  • Altitude: We sleep no higher than 3,870 m. The viewpoint hikes are optional day trips.
  • Extend it: Add the sacred lakes of Gosaikunda, or the Tamang Heritage Trail, for a longer trip.

Trek highlights

  • Kyanjin Gompa, a peaceful Buddhist monastery surrounded by peaks
  • Close views of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) and its glaciers
  • Sunrise hikes to Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) or Tserko Ri (4,984 m)
  • Tamang villages, yak cheese and warm hospitality
  • No flights needed, so it's easy to reach from Kathmandu

Retrace the valley downhill, with the mountains now behind you.
