Overview
The Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem close to Pokhara. Instead of following a river valley, the trail climbs straight up a ridge, through cloud forest and onto open grassland right under the summit of Machhapuchhre, the “Fishtail” mountain.
The trail only opened to trekkers in 2012, so it’s still quiet and the lodges are small and friendly. On a clear morning you’ll see the whole Annapurna range glowing above a sea of clouds.
Why I love this trek
It’s short, quiet and the views are huge. If you have only a week and want to feel close to the big mountains without the crowds, Mardi Himal is my top pick.
Good to know
- Fitness: Moderate. The climb from High Camp to base camp is steep, so we start early and go at a steady pace.
- Altitude: We sleep no higher than 3,580 m. The base camp hike is a day trip.
- Weather: The ridge can be windy and cold. Warm layers are important even in good seasons.
Trek highlights
- Some of the closest views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) you can get on foot
- A ridge walk with clouds below and peaks above
- Mossy rhododendron "cloud forest" full of birds
- A newer, quieter trail close to Pokhara
- Big views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Mardi Himal
Day-by-day itinerary
A typical plan. Every trip is flexible, so days can be added for rest, side trips or bad weather.
- Day 1
Pokhara → Pitam Deurali (2,100 m)
A short drive to Kande, then a walk via Australian Camp with views back over the Annapurnas.
- Day 2
Pitam Deurali → Forest Camp (2,550 m)
Into peaceful rhododendron and oak forest, with very few other trekkers.
- Day 3
Forest Camp → Low Camp (2,970 m)
Through mossy cloud forest to Low Camp, where Machhapuchhre suddenly appears above the trees.
- Day 4
Low Camp → High Camp (3,580 m)
Climb above the treeline onto the ridge via Badal Danda, with mountain views all the way.
- Day 5
Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m) → Low Camp
A pre-dawn hike up the ridge to the viewpoint and base camp, then descend to Low Camp.
- Day 6
Low Camp → Siding → Pokhara
A steep walk down to the village of Siding and a drive back to Pokhara.
